Density (lbs/ft³)Class

Density-based estimate per the 13-subprovision NMFC scale (Docket 2025-1, effective July 19, 2025). Bands include their lower bound: exactly 15.0 pcf is class 70. Item-specific classes (77.5, 110, 150, 200, 500) are not derivable from density — verify in ClassIT before booking.

Planning figures assume the density scale applies to your commodity. Handling, stowability, or liability flags can override density — check the NMFC item.

How freight density works

Density = weight ÷ volume. In imperial units: cubic feet = (L × W × H in inches) ÷ 1,728, then density in lbs/ft³ = weight ÷ cubic feet. Measure the extreme points — pallet, packaging, and overhang included.

Why plan backward?

Every class boundary is a price break. If your pallet sits at 14.9 pcf you pay class 85 rates; at 15.0 pcf you pay class 70. The planner shows the exact weight window — or the maximum height — that keeps you in the cheaper class.

Did the density scale change in 2025?

Yes. Docket 2025-1 (July 19, 2025) expanded the scale from 11 to 13 tiers and added classes 50 and 55 for dense freight. Charts ending at class 60 for 30+ pcf are outdated.
