Density (lbs/ft³)Class

Density-based estimate per the 13-subprovision NMFC scale (Docket 2025-1, effective July 19, 2025). Commodities with handling, stowability, or liability flags carry item-specific classes — verify with ClassIT or your carrier before booking.

How it works

Density = total weight ÷ total volume. Volume in cubic feet = (L × W × H in inches) ÷ 1,728, pallet and packaging included, measured at the extreme points. The class comes from the 13-subprovision NMFC density scale. Bands include their lower bound: exactly 15.0 pcf is class 70; 14.9 pcf is class 85.

Multiple pallets?

Carriers rate the shipment, not each piece. Multi-pallet mode sums every line's weight and cube, then classes the combined density — the same way carriers do.

When density isn't the whole story

Five classes — 77.5, 110, 150, 200, 500 — are not on the density scale. If a calculator returns one of them from a density number, it's using the retired pre-2025 chart. Items with handling, stowability, or liability flags keep item-specific classes: check the NMFC item.
